IN 1969 Rogers et al. described a case of unexplained anemia in association with diabetes
mellitus and sensorineural deafness. 1 The anemia responded only to pharmacologic
closes of thiamine. Another such case of" thiamine-responsive anemia" was reported by
Viana and Carvalho in 1978, 2 and two additional cases were presented by Haworth et al. in
