Coordinating calcification. A unifying model to explain bone mineralization and the absence
of ECM calcification in soft tissues is shown. The expression patterns of Mgp and Opg, two
inhibitors of ECM calcification, are indicated in red and blue, respectively. Mgp present in
artery walls and growth plate cartilage prevents ECM mineralization. In the absence of Mgp,
bone ECM (grey) calcifies. Other as-yet-unidentified inhibitors of ECM calcification may
prevent ECM calcification in other tissues.
