After liver injury, hepatic stellate cells (HSC) undergo a pleiotropic response termed
“activation” that also occurs in culture models and ultimately leads to the conversion of HSC
into myofibroblasts expressing smooth muscle α-actin (α-SMA). The onset of HSC
