In higher eukaryotes DNA double strand breaks (DSBs) are repaired by homologous
recombination (HRR) or non-homologous end joining (NHEJ). In addition to the DNA-PK
dependent pathway of NHEJ (D-NHEJ), cells employ a backup pathway (B-NHEJ) utilizing
