Excessive saturated free fatty acids (SFFAs; eg palmitate) in blood are a pathogenic factor in
diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and liver failure. In contrast, monounsaturated free
fatty acids (eg oleate) prevent the toxic effect of SFFAs in various types of cells. The
