Abstract
Nine fluids and tissues were obtained from each of 14 goats killed 1-344 days after intra-cerebral injection of scrapie goat brain, and injected into the brain of healthy goats. Brain, cs fluid and pituitary gland taken from goats killed 1-344 days after injection caused scrapie in the recipient goats, as did sciatic nerve taken after 121 days, salivary gland after 147 days, adrenal gland after 176 days, and muscle on the 344th day. Blood and urine did not cause scrapie. Of the 14 donor goats, only those killed 243-344 days after infection had clinical symptoms of scrapie. Histological evidence of scrapie was not found in a donor goat killed 92 days before the onset of clinical disease in the remaining animals but was found in 2 killed 65 and 23 days before that time. The incubation period in the recipient goats tended to shorten as the infection progressed in the donors. None of 192 goats and 18 sheep kept for several months or years in contact with goats having scrapie developed the disease.-MGG
