Cellular utilization of glucose is initiated by hexokinase-catalyzed phosphorylation of
glucose to glucose 6-phosphate. Phosphorylated glucose enters the glycolytic pathway, the
hexose monophosphate shunt, or is utilized for biosynthesis of amino-sugars and
