529 PPARγin Atherosclerosis muscle cells (SMCs), 21 macrophages22 and cardiomyocytes, in addition to adipose tissue, and that individuals with T2DM have an increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), the cardiovascular functions of PPARγhave been under intensive investigation. 23, 24 To date, experiments performed in vitro and in vivo and clinical studies have unequivocally proven that PPARγplays an important role in the cardiovascular system and suggest the activation of the receptors may have both favorable and unfavorable effects on the cardiovascular processes. Thus, this review will summarize the most recent progress regarding the role of PPARγin CVD, focusing on atherosclerosis and its related pathological processes, including restenosis and aneurysm.
