LAWRENCE STEINMAN is professor of neurological sciences and pediatrics at the Stanford
University School of Medicine. He is also chief scientist for immunology at Neurocrine
Biosciences, Inc., in La Jolla, Calif., which develops therapies based on the interactions of
the immune, nervous and endocrine systems. He earned his bachelorÃs degree in physics
