The prevalence of current smoking among HIV-infected individuals ranges between 40%
and 84% in various studies. 1–6 These estimates for the HIV-infected population are several-
fold higher than the current 20% overall adult prevalence in the United States. 7 With the
aging of the HIV-infected population, such a high smoking prevalence has profound health
