Systemic inflammatory illnesses (such as sepsis) are marked by degradation of the
endothelial glycocalyx, a layer of glycosaminoglycans (including heparan sulfate,
chondroitin sulfate, and hyaluronic acid) lining the vascular lumen. We hypothesized that
different pathophysiologic insults would produce characteristic patterns of released
