Philippine hemorrhagic fever (HF) is characterized by fever, malaise, and petechial
hemorrhages. The latter become purpuric, and frequently hollow viscus hemorrhages occur
before death. Hematologic studies of HP patients in shock have shown low values for
circulating blood platelets and plasma fibrinogen. These components were shown to
respond markedly to heparin administration. Necropsy findings in 100 patients who died of
