Abstract
Cages containing mice were enclosed in plastic sheeting and 5 ml. of a suspension of Cryptococcus neoformans were sprayed into each over a period of 5 minutes. Groups of mice were killed at intervals of 4, 8 and 12 hours and thereafter daily until the 8th day after exposure to the fungus. In each case blood was cultured and lungs and brain were examined histologically and culturally.
Cultures from lung yielded C. neoformans throughout the period of the experiment. The fungus could be histologically demonstrated in the lungs from the 4th day when bronchopneumonic lesions were also present. Brain culture became positive from the 3rd day and remained so; histologically, meningeal inflammation was apparent from the 5th day. Blood cultures yielded the yeast from the 18th hour to the 48th hour.
